MoMo Name Changes Cause Widespread Concern in Ghana

We are receiving messages from so many people saying the names on their MTN MOMO accounts have changed to unknown names. MTN Ghana whats going on?
People are worried
Some MTN Mobile Money (MoMo) users are growing concerned as the names associated with recipient accounts are unexpectedly changing within the MTN database during transactions.
Previously, some MTN customers noticed that when sending money via MoMo, the recipient’s name would sometimes appear as “Unknown” or show other unusual variations. These discrepancies raised concerns about potential unauthorized access or system-wide fraudulent activity. At the time, MTN Ghana advised affected customers to report these incidents, change their PINs immediately, and monitor their accounts for any unauthorized transactions.
Since the beginning of October 2025, a new variation of this issue has surfaced. Now, when a user attempts to send money to a contact, the recipient’s name might appear slightly altered. For example, a transfer to ‘Kofi Mensah’ might display the name as ‘Kofi Maanu Kojo Mensah’, even though the phone number remains correct.
This situation is causing widespread concern among users, with many fearing that the recipient’s account has been compromised or hacked. As a precaution, customers encountering these name changes are often calling the recipient to verify their identity before completing the transfer.
According to sources close to MTNBlog.net, the name changes are a result of a system-wide update. The names officially registered on the Ghana Card are now overriding the previous user-provided names in MTN’s database. This update primarily affects users who registered their SIM cards long before the recent mandatory SIM re-registration exercise that linked SIMs to the Ghana Card.
It is important to note that these changes are being implemented gradually. However, a lack of official communication from both the telecommunications company and the Government of Ghana about this update has created an information vacuum. This, combined with existing fears about SIM card fraud, has led to widespread panic.

Users should be aware that the primary purpose of this update is to ensure that the name on a MoMo account perfectly matches the official name on the user’s Ghana Card, enhancing security and formal identification.
If you are still in doubt about a transaction, it is advisable to call the official MTN customer care line, contact the owner of the number directly for confirmation, or visit a nearby MTN service center for clarification.
