MTN Ghana Begins Steps Toward 4G and 5G Future

MTN Ghana has announced plans to gradually move internet services in Ghana to the 4G and 5G future envisaged as it strategivally phases out its current 2G and 3G networks. It has assured customers that the Transition Will Be Handled Carefully to Give Users Enough Time to Adjust to Newer Technologies.
4G and 5G internet in Ghana will help MTN users to enjoy a hyper-connected world powered by high-speed, low-latency wireless networks.
This means MTN’s internet service will enable not only individual users but also businesses in the automobile industry, telemedicine and countries building smart cities to leverage the internet for business.
With the speed at which 5G will work, it will aid in connecting billions of devices. This added advantage will help revolutionise manufacturing, agriculture, entertainment and healthcare industries.
Digital Africa Summit In Accra: MTN Ghana 4G and 5G Future
Speaking to journalists at the Digital Africa Summit in Accra, MTN Ghana’s Chief Executive Officer, Stephen Blewett, noted that a considerable number of subscribers still rely on the older networks for various reasons.
He explained that while some customers intentionally stay on 2G and 3G to manage their data consumption, many others continue to use devices that cannot support 4G connectivity. “Despite the widespread availability of 4G, a lot of our customers are still on 3G. For some, it is about managing their data consumption, while others are constrained by devices that cannot support 4G,” Mr Blewett explained.
According to him, MTN’s long-term objective is to enhance network efficiency by eventually retiring outdated technologies, but the process will be implemented in phases.
“We cannot simply switch off 2G and 3G without ensuring that affordable 4G devices are within reach. Doing so would risk excluding a large number of Ghanaians,” he cautioned.

The company’s move for 4G and 5G future in Ghana aligns with a broader industry trend toward more efficient, high-speed networks, aimed at boosting user experience and preparing the ground for wider 5G adoption in the country.
