MTN Ghana Launches SME Accelerate to Boost Small Business Growth

MTN Ghana has introduced the SME Accelerate Initiative, a year-long programme designed to help small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) across the country through digital transformation and business support solutions.
Launched on April 10, 2025, with the theme “Business Done Smarter, Faster and Better,” the initiative seeks to help SMEs expand and embrace technology-driven growth. Speaking at the launch, Mohammed Abubakari, Head of SMEs at MTN Ghana Business, said the programme was developed to handle the major challenges facing SMEs, including limited access to finance, low digital adoption, and gaps in capacity development.

“The SME Accelerate is a platform we’ve developed to transform Ghana’s small and medium enterprises by equipping them with the digital tools and skills they need to scale,” Mr. Mohammed Abubakari noted.
He added that research conducted last year revealed large gaps in digitization, capacity building, and financial access during MTN’s monthly SME campaigns, which informed the company’s year-long focus on supporting entrepreneurs.
Chief Executive Officer of MTN Ghana, Stephen Blewett, highlighted the critical role SMEs play in Ghana’s economy, emphasizing the need for consistent support. “When you’re running a business, cash flow is important, and I can say that eighty percent of businesses in Ghana are SMEs and about sixty-five percent struggle with funding. If the SME industry collapses, we will be in trouble because it is the centre of businesses in Ghana,” he stated.
He reaffirmed MTN Ghana’s dedication to helping small businesses grow. “At MTN Ghana, we are committed to helping SMEs thrive and provide essential platforms for them,” he said.
The MTN Ghana SME Accelerate will go a long way to empower small businesses for growth.
Delivering the keynote address, the CEO of the Ghana Enterprises Agency (GEA), Margaret Ansei, commended MTN for aligning with national goals to boost entrepreneurship under the proposed 24-hour economy initiative. “GEA is excited that MTN Ghana is championing the operations of small and medium enterprises in Ghana. This aligns with the objectives of President John Mahama’s 24-hour economy and the operations of the GEA,” she said.
The SME Accelerate Programme will provide participants access to tailored MTN business solutions such as MTN MyBusiness, YellowBiz, and the SME Mate platform, along with unified communications and other digital tools to improve efficiency and market reach.
Bulgaria’s Consul to Ghana, H.E. Nico Van Staalduinen, also praised the initiative, noting its potential to create new international opportunities for entrepreneurs. “The initiative is part of MTN’s broader commitment to empower Ghanaian businesses and help them thrive not only in Ghana but also in the Bulgarian market,” he revealed.
